Murray’s Run Ends in State Semifinal Loss in Lexington

Lexington Christian Academy took advantage of a pair of early turnovers and went on to dispatch Murray 48-13 Friday night in the Class 2A state football semifinals.

An interception led to a 4-yard Tyler Morris touchdown run that put homestanding LCA up 6-0 just 45 seconds into the game.

Murray lost a fumble on its next drive before the game was even a minute old. Xavier Brown turned that into a 2-yard run at the 10:26 mark and the Eagles were off and running.

Quarterback Drew Nieves scored on a 7-yard run at the 6:15 mark of the opening quarter to make it 19-0.

Nieves threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter as Lexington Christian (10-1) built a 32-0 advantage at halftime.

Nieves had another TD run in the third quarter as LCA extended the margin to 48-0 entering the final frame.

Murray (8-4) broke up the shutout on a 15-yard touchdown run by Charvelle McCallister with 7:35 to play.

McCallister found the end zone again on a 10-yard run with just 6 seconds to play to make it 48-13.

McCallister finished with 81 yards rushing and the two TDs.

Rowdy Sokolowski ran for 46 yards and Brendan Dahncke had 44 for Murray.

Lexington Christian had 406 yards of total offense while Murray finished with 177.

Nieves passed for 196 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles while also gaining a team-high 77 yards on the ground with two more scores.

Mason Moore had three receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown.

Murray saw its four-game winning streak ended.

Lexington Christian has won six straight and will take on Beechwood in the Class 2A state championship next Friday at Kroger Field in Lexington.

Beechwood defeated West Carter 35-34 in the other 2A state semifinal game. Beechwood overcame a 34-27 deficit late with a 44-yard touchdown pass and two-point conversion pass.
