A Visit from John Calipari (with apologies to Clement Clarke Moore)

christmas-edit

‘Twas the night before Christmas
In old 2020
But From Pikeville to Paducah
Something looked funny

Calipari’s Wildcats
We’re just 1-5
And for the No 1 recruiting class
That just didn’t jive
Nothing was working
Not the jump shots or drives,
No free throws or treys
Or alley oops with high-fives

The team was so bad
That losing didn’t mattter
Calipari said so,
In his best post game patter

A natural disaster,
It surely is not
“Just trust the process”,
Soon we’ll get hot.
But the process isn’t working
The old “one-and-done”
A new roster each year
Just isn’t fun.

No one is happy
And players keep leaving
At just 1-5
it’s hard to keep believing

With U of L coming,
then in conference we’ll stay
It’s hard to see victories
With the way this team plays

So what can fans do
With a new year ahead
And dreams of a trophy
No longer dancing in their heads.
“Just trust the process”
We’ll win one some day
“Believe in the players”,
Calipari would say

“Keep hanging in there
I’ll show you the way.”
Then he’d jump from the podium
And run from the room
As the fans reach for Imodium
To kill the nausea and gloom.

“Now, Bruiser, now Joel,
Now Robic and Jai
Head to the plane
We all have to fly.”
“Now dash away, dash away
dash away all

To Chicago and Houston,
Minneapolis-St Paul,
We need all the five stars
Who can jump and can run
To be the next batch
Of our great “one and dones”.”
