Caldwell County’s girls had a difficult time getting much offense going in their season opener on Monday.
The Lady Tigers managed just 13 points in each half while dropping a 40-26 decision to Union County at the CAB gym in Princeton.
Caldwell trailed just 16-13 at halftime. But Union scored the first six points of the second half and went on to outscore the Lady Tigers 13-2 in the third quarter.
That gave the Bravettes a 29-15 advantage entering the final stanza.
A 7-0 burst to start the fourth quarter gave Caldwell some hope. Majah Hollowell had a 3-pointer and a driving layup to get the Lady Tigers within 29-22 with still 6:39 to play.
But Union countered with a 7-0 run of its own to regain control and went on to post the 14-point victory.
Madison Morris scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the second half for the Bravettes. Mati Hagan, Reese Hagan and Raelle Beaven each had six points.
Hollowell’s nine points topped Caldwell. Jacey Jaggers had five points while A.J. Hollowell and Morgan McDaniels each had four.
Caldwell’s girls will go on the road for the first time on Friday when they visit 7th District foe Madisonville-North Hopkins.
