While Monday evening wasn’t particularly cold for early January, the Todd County Central boys’ basketball team endured a frigid shooting night in a 60-38 loss to Christian Fellowship in both teams’ season-opener.
The Rebels start the season with a loss for the first time since the 2016-17 season, while Andrew Allen’s 27 points led Christian Fellowship to its first opening-night win in eighteen years.
Logan Burgess scored the Rebels’ first 5 points to take an early advantage, but Allen got hot with 11 first-quarter points to help the Eagles to a 13-8 lead after one.
Todd Central only managed single digits again in the second quarter, with Christian Fellowship’s Luke Grigg outscoring the Rebels on his own with 9 in the frame. The Rebels got within 3 at 17-14 after one of two free throws by Micah Smith, but the Eagles closed the half on a 7-2 spurt to lead 24-16 at the break.
Christian Fellowship scored the first 5 points of the second half, with the Rebels taking a timeout trailing 29-16 after an Allen 3-pointer. The Eagles continued to build the lead behind a combined 14 points for Allen and Grigg and were in control 43-27 with a quarter to play.
Preston Moore and Burgess combined for 9 points in the fourth, but a bucket by Smith was the Rebels’ only other points. Allen added 6 more, and Andrew Dunning returned from a first-quarter injury to add 5 for the Eagles, and they eased to a 22-point victory.
