Winter sports in the Christian County Public School System have been paused due to a rising level of COVID-19 cases which prompted the district to move to virtual learning. In-person classes were scheduled to resume in Christian County Wednesday.
Spokesman John Rittenhouse said an unprecedented spike in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the past 48 hours was the reason for the district’s decision. He said all students will continue virtual learning through the end of the week.
This means all games and practices involving basketball, swimming, and wrestling at Hopkinsville High and Christian County High are on hold, according to Rittenhouse.
Last week, the school system shut down the Christian County boys’ basketball program due to a positive COVID test within the program. Other team members were placed into quarantine.
Earlier Tuesday, the annual Toyota of Hopkinsville Basketball Shootout involving three games at Hopkinsville and Christian County was canceled.
The announcement meant the cancellation of Hopkinsville’s season-opening doubleheader with Madisonville at Tiger Gym. Monday’s swim meet at Bowling Green was also canceled.
The move to virtual learning does not affect private schools University Heights Academy and Heritage Christian Academy.
