No word yet on whether Terrence Clarke will be able to play Saturday night when Kentucky plays at Florida. The freshman played only 14 minutes against Louisville because of an ankle injury and did not play at all in the wins over Mississippi State and Vanderbilt.
The freshman is averaging 10.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game but shooting only 43 percent from the field and 22.7 percent (5-for-22) from 3-point range. He also has a team-high 21 turnovers.
Kentucky coach John Calipari had moved Clarke to point guard before his injury. That’s not his natural position but Calipari thought he could run the team and Clarke felt he could run the team. But his injury and the recent improvement of Devin Askew make it seem unlikely Clarke will be back at point guard when he does return.
“When Terrence comes back, I’m sure we’ll have a game plan for him, but right now he’s out and we’re just hoping that he gets healthy. That’s the bottom line,” Kentucky assistant coach Bruiser Flint said last week.
Askew has confidence Clarke will put his offensive struggles behind him when he does return. He’s also confident Brandon Boston — a 35.8 percent shooter from the field who is hitting just 15.2 percent from 3 — will get his issues corrected.
“They’re going to pick it up. They’re great offensive players, both of them, and they’re just waiting on that one game, that one situation where they get their feel back,” Askew said.
“But honestly, they’re a part of our team. We know what they can do and how special they are to our team. We know what they can do offensively. We have no doubt in them and we keep believing in them. We keep going back to them, so we trust them.”
