The Dawson Springs girls have some retooling to do as the get ready for the 2020-21 basketball season.

The Lady Panthers lost just two players to graduation last season. But top returning scorer Brooklyn Clark transferred to Webster County in the offseason. That has Dawson Springs looking at a rebuilding year.

Clark is one of the 2nd Region’s top players and had topped 1,000 career points last year as a freshman with the Lady Panthers. An all-region selection, Clark scored 20.5 points and grabbed 7.1 rebounds a contest.

Clark’s absence makes a young squad even more youthful and takes away a big chunk of last year’s offensive production.

Lady Panther head coach Amanda Scott will now look to build around guards Abby Ward (a sophomore) and Brylee Spurlin (a junior).

Ward is now the top returning scorer for Dawson Springs after getting 7.7 points a game last season as a freshman.

Spurlin, one of the tallest players on the team at 5-foot-8, scored 2.1 points and grabbed 3.5 rebounds a contest a year ago.

Sophomore guard Gracie Harper returns after scoring 3.5 points a game last season as does sophomore forward Natalee Oldham, who scored 1.7 points.

Sophomore guard Macy Drennan played in all 31 games last year and averaged 1.6 points.

The Lady Panthers will be looking for some other players to step up as well.

Dawson Springs went 12-19 in 2019-20. It was the third-straight 12-win season for Dawson Springs, which put up 11 wins each of the two years before that.

But the Lady Panthers continue to chase their first winning season since going 12-10 under coach Norman Manasco in the 2002-03 season.

Dawson’s girls will tip off the new season at home on Monday against Trigg County.
