Late Surge Sends Calloway County Past Lady Wildcats

1-8-noffsinger

Calloway County closed the game on an 11-3 run to defeat Trigg County 51-43 Friday at Wildcat Gym. It was the Lady Lakers’ third win in four days.

It was the Calloway middle schoolers that did the damage, especially in the second half.  Eighth-grader Skylar Waller scored nine of her game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter.  She also was 9-of-10 at the free throw line.

Seventh-grader Saylor Lowe knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

Trigg County, who struggled offensively in its opening loss to Todd County Central Tuesday, trailed only once in the first half and built a 17-10 second quarter lead.

Calloway scored the final five points of the second quarter and began the second half with a 10-4 run to build a seven-point lead of their own.

Marleigh Reynolds scored all six of her points in the third quarter to keep Trigg within two points heading into the final eight minutes.

Calloway again built an advantage of seven points in the fourth quarter. Adri Phillips scored eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to keep Trigg close, but the Lady Lakers hit 6-of-9 free throws down the stretch, and Lowe hit a 3-pointer with over a minute left to seal the win.

T.T. Grubbs scored 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Lady Wildcats, tying Phillips for scoring honors.

Elle Carson joined Waller and Lowe in double figures with 14 points, including her 1,000th career point in the fourth quarter.

Turnovers were again an issue for the Lady Wildcats, who saw Calloway score 34 points off their 24 miscues.  Trigg did control the boards 36-21 and scored 13 second-chance points.

Calloway County has won 21 of the 23 career meetings with Trigg, including the last 13 contests dating back to 1984.

Trigg County looks to get its first win of the season Saturday at Daviess County in the first-ever meeting between the schools.
