After a tight first half in which Lyon County’s Travis Perry saw several shots do everything but go down, the freshman guard erupted for 22 after halftime to help the Lyons improve to 3-0 with a 71-54 win over visiting Webster County on Friday night.
The Lyons led 9-2 two minutes in after a jumper by Jack Reddick, but Webster responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer and a layup for Aaron Harmon, to lead 11-9 midway through the first quarter. Travis Perry knocked down two free throws after a technical foul on the Trojans to retake the lead at 14-11, but Webster scored the final 5 points, including a corner 3-pointer by Ryan Roland with :20 left, to lead 16-14 after one.
Throughout the second quarter, the teams battled back and forth before Jackson Shoulders and Luke Gilbert scored down low on consecutive possessions to give the Lyons a 29-26 edge at the half.
After a 9-point first half, Perry wasted little time getting going in the second, scoring the first 10 points of the third quarter to stretch the Lyon lead to 13. However, the Trojans got 4 points each from Roland, Hunter McNaughton, and Destin Allen to stay within striking distance and only trailed 51-43 with a quarter to play.
The lead was down to 6 with 5:30 left before Brady Shoulders got hot from deep to put the game away. Brady drained a 3-pointer, followed by a runner from Reddick, before drilling two more 3s on back-to-back possessions to put the Lyons in control for good, leading 67-50 with less than three minutes remaining.
The Lyons are off until Tuesday when they open 2nd Region All “A” play with a visit from University Heights Academy. Lyon County will be looking to avenge last season’s 78-58 All “A” loss to the Blazers.
