Trigg County wobbled a bit in the fourth quarter but righted the ship in the final minute to grab a 40-35 win over Logan County Saturday at Wildcat Gym. It’s Trigg’s first win over Logan in seven career meetings.
Logan County led for most of the first half and held a 20-15 lead at halftime as both teams struggled to make shots. The Lady Cougars connected on 7-of-22 from the field, while Trigg made just 5-of-22.
Trigg County turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and began the frame on a 13-2 run. Olivia Noffsinger and Adri Phillips combined for 11 of the points during the run as the Lady Wildcats built a 28-22 lead.
The Lady Wildcats hit 6-of-9 shots in the quarter and turned six Lady Cougar turnovers into five points.
Trigg extended the lead to 34-26 on a Phillips layup with 6:14 left. Then, the Lady Wildcat offense went dark. Gracie Borders scored all five of her points in the fourth quarter as Logan County went on a 9-0 run to grab a 35-34 lead with 1:52 left.
Following a Logan turnover with 1:08 left, Trigg had trouble advancing the basketball and was forced to call consecutive timeouts. Out of the second timeout, Noffsinger found Phillips in the paint for an easy bucket to give Trigg a 36-35 lead.
After two missed shots by Logan, Phillips found Marleigh Reynolds for a bucket with 15 seconds left for a 38-35 lead.
Reynolds scored eight second half points, including clinching free throws with a second left to go with her 11 rebounds.
Trigg County shot 52-percent from the field in the second half but struggled again at the free throw line making 7-of-16.
Logan County also had struggles at the charity stripe, hitting 12-of-27 in the game.
Phillips led the Lady Wildcats with 12 points. She added six rebounds. Noffsinger scored a season-high 11 points. DeDe Barbee had four points and six steals.
Kadyn Costello led Logan County [0-4] with nine points. Emerson McKinnis added six points and 13 rebounds.
Trigg County improved to 2-3 and will travel to University Heights Academy on Tuesday.
