For the Caldwell County Lady Tigers, it was a nice way to rebound from a tough one-point loss to Lyon County in the 2nd Region All A Classic. Jacey Jaggers scored ten of her 24 points in the final four minutes of the game to lead Caldwell County to a 61-51 win at Christian County Monday evening.
The game was the season opener for the Lady Colonels, whose season had been delayed two weeks due to elevated COVID-19 numbers in the Christian County Public Schools and in the Christian County community as a whole.
Caldwell County’s lead was just 52-51 late in the contest, when the Lady Tigers finished strong, scoring the final nine points of the game to close out the win, which was much closer than the final score would indicate. The game saw four ties and 11 lead changes before the Lady Tigers went on their game-clinching run.
Behind the play of Amari Brown and Reni Shemwell, Christian County led 11-10 after the opening quarter of play. The two combined to score 9 of Christian County’s 11 points.
Caldwell County opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 17-11. Brown and Shemwell rallied the Lady Colonels to battle back and tie the game at 20-20. The Lady Tigers would end up taking a one-point lead into the locker room at the break at 24-23. Jacey Jaggers and Maja Hollowell combined for 16 points in the first half for Caldwell County.
The early part of the third quarter went back and forth, with two ties and two lead changes. With the game tied at 31-31, Jacey Jaggers led Caldwell County on an 8-1 run to take a 39-32 lead. Trinity McGee, who had been held scoreless in the first half, helped bring the Lady Colonels back to within 44-41 at the end of the quarter. McGee finished the quarter with 8 points.
The game stayed tight as the final quarter got started. There were four lead changes and one tie in the first four minutes of the quarter before Caldwell County went on their run to claim the victory.
Jacey Jaggers led all scorers in the contest with 24 points, including five made 3-pointers. Maja Hollowell also reached double figures, finishing with 17.
Caldwell County’s free throw shooting was key to securing the win. The Lady Tigers finished 17 of 20 at the charity stripe, including 15 of 16 in the second half.
Trinity McGee was the only Lady Colonel to reach double figures with 12. Reni Shemwell added 9 points, while Treliyah Thomas chipped in with 8.
Caldwell County improves to 2-2 on the season and will return to action Tuesday night when they host Paducah Tilghman.
Christian County opens the season at 0-1. The Lady Colonels are back in action Friday when they take on Hopkinsville in an 8th District matchup.
