Six-Strong Lady Lyons Have Enough to Beat Trigg County

1-29-matthews

Lyon County Coach Jeff Doom will have a lonely bench in the coming week due to COVID-19 protocols.

The Lady Lyons shook that adversity aside Friday and beat Trigg County 54-49 with just six players in uniform.

One starter and two key reserves are in quarantine after coming into contact with a JV player from another school this week that tested positive.

Lyon County trailed by eight points in the third quarter but used a 20-5 run to take control and snap a five-game losing streak to the Lady Wildcats.

Kent’Tavia Matthews scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half and hit six of 10 free throws for Lyon.

Down 27-25 at halftime, Trigg County opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run for a 35-27 lead.  Trigg built its lead to 39-29 with 3:07 left before Matthews keyed a 9-0 Lyon run to end the quarter with five points and two steals.

Trigg’s last lead came at 42-41 one minute into the fourth quarter. Lyon scored on its next five trips down the floor to build a 51-44 lead with 4:07 left.

The Lady Wildcats scored only two points in the final 3:50 and blew their second 10-point second half lead this week.

Collins was big for the Lady Lyons early, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds in the first half.  She finished with 20 points and 15 boards.

Lyon County outrebounded Trigg 38-26.

Neither team put on a clinic at the free throw line.  Lyon hit 5 of 9 in the second half and finished 11 of 21 for the game. Trigg hit 3 of 12 at the line.

Adri Phillips led Trigg County with 16 points. Olivia Noffisinger added 11 points and seven assists.

Both teams return to the court Tuesday.  Lyon County hosts Caldwell County, while Trigg County entertains Livingston Central.  A Trigg win Tuesday means they will play Lyon again in the district tournament semifinals.  A Trigg loss makes them the four seed on its home floor and a first-round game with Crittenden County.
