With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic still leading to significant changes in how we live everyday life, there will be some changes in how the 2nd Region boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments play out this season. That announcement coming Wednesday morning following a meeting of the 2nd Region Athletic Directors’ Association.
One of the changes has to do with tournament locations. Originally, this year’s boys’ tournament was to be played at Madisonville-North Hopkins, with the girls’ tournament to be held at Union County. Due to the current pandemic and multiple restrictions as a result of COVID-19 protocols, the Association voted Wednesday morning to select Madisonville-North Hopkins as the host of the boys’ basketball regional tournament and Hopkins County Central as the host of the girls’ regional tournament.
The normal regional site selection plan was placed on hold for the 2020-21 basketball season and will resume where it was interrupted next season.
With those two sites selected for the tournaments, the athletic directors went on to note that the seating capacity at Madisonville-North Hopkins will allow for 390 tickets to be sold for each game. Seating capacity at Hopkins County Central will allow for 375 tickets to be sold for each game.
There will be no cheerleading squads, dance teams, or bands in attendance at this year’s regional tournaments. There will also be no passes accepted of any type. Everyone admitted to the contests will be required to have a ticket.
Region tournaments are scheduled to begin the week of March 22.
