It’s been a crazy few weeks for Trigg County senior Jaquellus Martin, who signed an agreement to play football for Murray State University Wednesday.

Martin originally committed to Kentucky Wesleyan College last month. However, he changed his mind over the weekend and switched to Murray State where he will be a preferred walk-on.

Martin said the chance to play at Murray State was “too good to pass up.”

Martin led the Trigg receiving corps with 31 catches for 711 yards. His 11 touchdowns are third-most in a season behind Devron Wadlington [2000] and Steve Oliver [1970].

He finished his career with 13 touchdowns which are tied for fifth-most in TCHS history.

Martin set the single-game receiving record with 242 yards against Paducah Tilghman on Nov. 20.  His three touchdowns that night are tied for second-most in TCHS history.

He was also second on the team with 515 rushing yards and scored a team-high nine touchdowns on the ground.

Martin is also a standout on the track where he etched his name among the Trigg County track and field elites at the 2019 state meet.  He ran the second-fastest time in school history in finishing fifth in the 200-meter dash.  His time of 11.24 seconds was the fastest by a Trigg athlete since Greg Bridges won the state title in 1987.

He is looking forward to his final season on the track in 2021 after COVID-19 took away the 2020 season.

Wednesday’s socially-distanced ceremony was held at Wildcat Gym and attended by Jaquellus’ bother Jakelzie and sister Jakashea, both former Wildcat athletic standouts, as well as current coaches and former coach Coby Lewis.
