Both Calloway County and Trigg County were able to put together second half scoring streaks Saturday, but the Lady Lakers had the more decisive one on their way to a 45-39 win in Murray.
Calloway used a 17-2 run in the second half to break open a close game. Eighth-grader Skylar Waller scored nine of her game-high 23 points during the surge. She finished 7 of 11 from the field and 8 of 9 at the free throw line.
Down 39-23 early in the fourth quarter, Trigg County answered with a 14-2 run to get to within four points with 1:06 left. Olivia Noffsinger buried a pair of 3-pointers during the run, and Marleigh Reynolds was 4 of 4 at the free throw line.
Despite going the final 4:48 without a field goal, Waller hit all four of her free throw attempts in the final 45 seconds to keep Trigg County at bay.
Madison Futrell added eight points for Calloway County, which won its first game since losing second-leading scorer Elle Carson and her 16 points per game for an extended period due to a shoulder injury.
The first quarter was a back and forth affair with five lead changes. Calloway built its lead to 22-14 before Noffsinger drained a half-court shot ahead of the halftime horn to get the Lady Wildcats to within five points.
Noffsinger led Trigg with 12 points and five rebounds. Reynolds added 10 points and nine rebounds.
Calloway County has won 14 straight games against Trigg County dating back to 1984.
Trigg County will host Madisonville Tuesday, who takes the place of Paducah Tilghman who was forced into COVID protocol earlier in the week.
