If the past few weeks have been any indication, this year’s boys’ 2nd Region basketball tournament could be one of the most wide-open affairs we have seen in several years. You can make the argument that there are at least six, maybe even seven teams with a legitimate shot to win the trip to Rupp. This week, even though they suffered their first loss of the season, Lyon County continues to sit in the #1 slot in the YSE 2nd Region Boys’ Basketball “Super 7.” But, there are several teams, just lurking right over their shoulder, setting up a fun stretch run to the season.
– Lyon County (14-1) – Without Jackson Shoulders, the Lyons took it in the chops from a good Owensboro Catholic squad. Could the two teams meet again at the All A Classic in Richmond? The Lyons begin play in the tournament next Wednesday against Kentucky Country Day.
– Webster County (13-3) – The Trojans are a buzzer-beater away from being on a ten-game winning streak. They are rolling and look very much like a team that will contend for the regional title.
– University Heights (3-6) – The Blazers have wins over Owensboro Catholic, who beat Lyon County and Webster County, and Madisonville-North Hopkins in their last three games. Don’t let the record fool you, this is a regional contender.
– Madisonville-North Hopkins (5-3) – The Maroons’ three losses have been to pretty good teams, Owensboro Catholic, Muhlenberg County, and UHA. While not as loaded as the last two years, don’t sleep on this team coming down the stretch.
– Hopkinsville (2-2) – The Tigers remain in protocol for the moment. Set to return to action on February 16 on the road at Crittenden County.
– Henderson County (5-7) – The northern Colonels have dropped five straight. Now, let’s qualify that by saying the five losses came to solid basketball teams. But it is not often that Henderson loses five in a row period.
– Union County (9-6) – With four wins in their last six games, the Braves appear to be one of those dangerous postseason teams. Some big games ahead, including contests with Madisonville-North Hopkins and University Heights.
