The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has approved spring sports competition for Fort Campbell High School and Fort Knox High School. That decision was handed down this week and means baseball, softball. track and field, and tennis may play a schedule of games this spring.
The two DoDEA schools were the only ones in the state that operated outside of the KHSAA’s guidelines for a return to sports.
Last August, the DoDEA announced high school sports at military installations at Health Protection Condition level Bravo, such as Fort Campbell, would not be allowed to play high school sports with a high or moderate COVID-19 infection risk such as football, soccer, and volleyball. The decision effectively canceled those sports seasons at Fort Campbell and Fort Knox. Golf and cross country were not affected.
The DoDEA followed suit with its winter sports, effectively canceling the basketball and wrestling seasons. Swimming and archery were not affected. The sports that were not allowed to play were allowed to condition at school facilities under DoDEA guidance.
