2021 2nd Region All A Champions - Lyon County

With a winter storm moving into the area, the Lyon County Lyons hit the road to Richmond in an effort to beat the weather and be in place for Wednesday’s opening game in the All A Classic state tournament. The Lyons are currently set, weather permitting, to take on Kentucky Country Day at 4:30 pm eastern time Wednesday in McBrayer Arena.

The two teams were originally set to meet at 4:00 pm Wednesday, but the game was shifted half an hour when the brackets for both the boys’ and girls’ tournaments had to be modified after the tournament start was delayed a day due to the winter storm that hit the state Sunday night and Monday.

The Bearcats reached the state tournament by virtue of winning the 7th Region All A Classic tournament. KCD rolled past Highlands Latin 64-39, and then took down Walden 58-48 in the regional title game.

KCD, who enters the game at 5-7, is led by sophomore Will Crockett, who is averaging 23.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Crockett has made 23 three-pointers this season and shoots 77-percent at the free throw line. He averaged 21.0 points in the two All A regional tournament wins.

Crockett receives help from Nicholas Roemer, who averages 14.8 points a game for the Bearcats. Roemer is the team’s top rebounder at 6.5 boards a contest. He averaged 21.5 points in the two regional tournament wins for KCD.

Kentucky Country Day shoots 44.4 percent from the field. The Bearcats are a solid 33.7 percent from behind the line. KCD does struggle some from the line, connecting on only 59.2 percent of their free throws.

KCD’s wins have come over Highland Latin, twice, Walden, Christian Education Consortium, and Eminence. Their losses have been to Holy Cross, Portland Christian, Central Hardin, Christian Academy of Louisville, Beth Haven, Ballard, and Louisville Collegiate.

The Bearcats are coached by Anthony Mathis, who is in his 3rd season as head coach at the school. His record at KCD is 34-35.

The winner of the game between Lyon County and Kentucky Country Day will take on the winner of the game between Clinton County and Evangel Christian, Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm eastern.
