The winner of both the boys’ and girls’ 2021 All A Classic state tournament will go down as Mother Nature. The winter weather of the past several days did something not even the ice storm of 2009 could do.

Just prior to Tuesday afternoon’s first game of the rescheduled tournament, which had already been delayed for a day due to the winter weather, tournament officials made the decision to cancel the statewide tournament for smaller schools due to conditions, and the anticipation of another storm impacting the state for the latter part of the week.

The cancellation is the first for the tournament since it went to a statewide format.

For the Lyon County Lyons, who left Eddyville Monday and made the difficult track to Richmond in less than ideal conditions, it means losing out on a chance to make a run at the small school title, as the Lyons were among the favorites going into the tournament this week.

Lyon County will play Walton-Verona at McBrayer Arena Tuesday afternoon in a regular-season matchup. The Lyons had been set to play Kentucky Country Day Wednesday afternoon in an opening-round contest. The Lyons will now play KCD on their way home Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 ET.

The tournament cancellation also means the loss of an appearance for the Crittenden County Lady Rockets, who had been re-scheduled to take on Newport Central Catholic Thursday.
