While it was not in the setting that they hoped it would take place in, the Lyon County Lyons, who are the 2nd Region All A champions, took down the 7th Region All A champions Wednesday afternoon. After pushing their way through a sluggish start, the Lyons roared past Kentucky Country Day 91-58 in Louisville.
The two teams had originally been scheduled to play Wednesday afternoon in McBrayer Arena in an opening round game of the 2021 All A Classic state tournament. That game, however, was wiped out when tournament officials elected at the last minute Tuesday to cancel the event for this year due to hazardous road conditions across the state following Monday’s winter storm.
After dropping their second straight game Tuesday, in a tough loss to Walton-Verona at McBrayer Arena, the Lyons got off the bus at KCD Wednesday and struggled to get going out of the gate. The Bearcats, behind the play of Will Crockett and Nick Roemer, jumped out to an early 11-3 lead. But that would be the last KCD saw of the Lyons for the rest of the afternoon.
Lyon County would then hold the Bearcats scoreless for more than six minutes. The Lyons closed out the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 15-11 lead after one.
After being held scoreless in the first eight minutes of the game, Lyon County’s Jackson Shoulders ruled the middle of the game. Shoulders would score 17 points over the second and third quarters as the Lyons ripped control of the game away from the Bearcats and started ripping the game open.
Not only did the Lyons get their offense on track, the Lyon County defense began to overwhelm KCD, with the end result being several steals, turnovers, and easy baskets. By halftime, the lead had grown to 32-19.
The news went from bad to worse for Kentucky Country Day in the third quarter. After being held to five first half points, Lyon County’s Travis Perry got it cranked up in the third quarter. Perry and Shoulders would combine to score 16 points in the third as the Lyons blew the lead out to 58-32.
Perry helped salt the game away in the 4th quarter, adding ten more, as Lyon County cruised on out to the 33 point win.
In addition to their defensive effort, the Lyons were effective behind the arc. Lyon County knocked down seven 3-pointers in the game, led by Brady Shoulders with four.
Travis Perry led the Lyon County attack with 23 points. Jackson Shoulders added 19 points and 10 rebounds.
KCD’s Will Crockett topped all scorers with 30 points, including five made three pointers. He was the only Bearcat to reach double figures in the game.
In ending their two game skid, the Lyons improve to 15-2 on the season.
Kentucky Country Day drops to 5-8.
