Out From Under COVID Shadow, 8th District to Finally Decide Seeding on the Court

This picture between UHA and Hopkinsville was taken last season. We used it because there has not been a boys' 8th District game played in 2020-21 due to COVID-19 protocol and winter weather. The seeding should be decided with games played in the next two weeks.

With just over three weeks left in the regular season, there has not been an 8th District boys’ basketball game played to determine the seeding for the postseason tournament.

COVID-19 protocol and this week’s winter weather have put more cancellations on the board than wins or losses.

With a 4-6 record, University Heights has played more games than Hopkinsville (2-2) and Christian County (0-4) combined.  The latter two have suffered through two different stints of COVID-19 protocol since the start of the season last month.  Hopkinsville has lost 20 games from its schedule due to the protocol while Christian County has lost 15.

UHA has had one stretch in quarantine due to contact from a player on another team.

Fort Campbell is not fielding a basketball team this season due to DoDEA guidelines which have been more strict than the other sanctioned schools in Kentucky and Tennessee that would have been on their schedule.

The first district game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 27 when Christian County crosses North Drive to play at University Heights. It will be their third attempt at playing the game.

The Colonels will play at Hopkinsville on Monday, March 1 after having four previous attempts canceled.

UHA will play Hopkinsville on both March 4 and on March 8.  The first scheduled game between the schools was on Jan. 8 at Hoptown.  The March 4 game is at UHA, and the March 8 game is at Tiger Gym.  The KHSAA has said the location of the first game between the schools before the cancellation is supposed to count toward the seeding.  It’s unclear which of the games will count.

Because of COVID-19 guidelines in place for the 2020-21 season only, the KHSAA ruled that only the first game between district teams will count toward the seeding of the district tournament.

On the girls’ side, Christian County (5-3) has wrapped up the top seed in the district tournament and already secured a spot in the region tournament with the 8th District a three-team tourney this year.

Hopkinsville (1-3) and University Heights (1-7) have seen two previously scheduled meetings canceled due to COVID-19 protocol.

The 8th District Tournament will be played the week of March 15 at Hopkinsville High School.
