
Playing without two players and with a couple more limited through injury, the Christian County girls’ basketball clawed its way to a 4th-quarter lead only to lose 44-38 to visiting Union County on Monday night.
The Lady Colonels, playing their first game in two weeks, drop their second-straight to slip to 5-4 overall. The Lady Braves win their third on the bounce to improve to 7-5.
Christian County got off to a good start and led 7-2 after Serenity Shemwell scored down low, but the Lady Braves answered with a 10-0 run and led 14-10 after one.
Amelia Mackey scored all 6 of her 2nd-quarter points in less than a minute to give Union a 22-14 advantage with 2:55 to play in the first half. Trinity McGee hit one of two free throws and Ashanti Banks hit a runner with :28 left to pull the Lady Colonels within 5 at the break.
Union twice stretched the margin to 8 on a Madison Morris 3-pointer and again on a layup by Jralee Roberson with 2:23 to go in the third. Shemwell hit one of two free throws and followed with a jumper to again trim the lead to 5 heading to the 4th.
Christian County scored the first 9 points of the final frame to take the lead at 33-29 with 5:33 to play. The Lady Braves surged back in front and took the lead for good after a Mackey jumper from the wing put them up 4 with two minutes left. Morris scored all 7 of her 4th-quarter points from the free-throw line, including 4 of 5 down the stretch, to seal the win for Union County.
NeVeah Day was the lone Lady Colonel in double figures with 10 to go with 8 rebounds. Shemwell finished with 9 points and 11 rebounds to lead the team on the boards. The Lady Colonels didn’t do themselves any favors at the charity stripe, finishing 8/27.
