With Monday’s loss to Murray in the All-A State Tournament still fresh in their minds, the Lyon County Lyons took a big step toward putting that disappointment behind them with an 87-63 road win over McCracken County on Thursday.
The Lyons win their second-straight and fourth in five tries ahead of a trip to Cadiz to face Trigg County on Tuesday. The Mustangs dropped their second in three after a 10-game winning streak.
Recently minted 2,000-point scorer Travis Perry poured in 31 points to lead the Lyons, beginning with a 13-point first quarter. Jackson Shoulders got off to a quick start as well, chipping in 11 to help the Lyons lead 30-12 after one.
Brant Brower got hot for the Mustangs with 11 points in the second quarter, including three 3-pointers. Max Blackwell and Noah Dumas combined for 9 and the Mustangs shaved 7 points of the Lyons’ lead for a 45-34 halftime score.
Perry and Shoulders cranked it back up in the third and the Lyons’ advantage ballooned to 20 points. Perry drilled two more 3s on the way to 12 points and Shoulders added 8 to put the Lyons in control with a quarter to play.
Brower scored 5 in the fourth to try to fuel the Mustang comeback, but Gunnar Bingham matched him and the Lyons shot 10/13 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.
