The first time this season the UHA Lady Blazers and the Dawson Springs Lady Panthers met on the court the Lady Blazers picked up their first win of the season. Saturday afternoon, it was the Lady Panther’s turn.
Dawson Springs got 27 points from sophomore Abby Ward, 19 of which came in the second half, as the Lady Panthers defended their home court with a 56-44 win Saturday afternoon.
One would be hard-pressed to blame the Lady Blazers if they were a little leg weary during the game. UHA was playing its third game in less than 72 hours and 5th game in the last eight days, with a roster of only seven varsity players.
Gracie Harper got the Lady Panthers off to a quick start with 8 points in the first quarter. The Lady Blazers hung with Dawson Springs early on in the game. With Brittyn Northington scoring six points, UHA trailed just 13-10 after the opening eight minutes.
After being limited to just two free throws in the opening quarter, Abby Ward began to get things rolling for the Lady Panthers in the second quarter. Ward scored six points in the quarter, and Dawson Springs went 8-8 at the free-throw line, as the Lady Panthers extended their lead to 29-19 at the half.
Just as it appeared the Lady Panthers were going to cruise to the win, the Lady Blazers fought their way back into the game. Getting solid play from Brianna Daniel, Amaryia Bass, and Alecia Davis, University Heights cut the lead to 38-34 heading into the final quarter.
However, the 4th quarter turned into the Abby Ward show. Ward hit for 12 points in the final eight minutes as Dawson Springs fended off the UHA rally. Ward, along with Gracie Harper, combined to score all but two of the Lady Panthers points coming down the stretch as Dawson Springs pulled back out for the 12 point win.
UHA was paced by Brittyn Northington, who finished the day with 15 points. Alecia Davis also reached double figures with 11.
Dawson’s Abby Ward led all scorers with 27 points. Gracie Harper also had a big afternoon chipping in with 16 points.
UHA drops their sixth straight game and falls to 1-12 on the year. The Lady Blazers are set to return to action Tuesday at Hopkins County Central. A Monday night game against Todd County Central has been canceled as the Lady Rebels are currently in COVID-19 protocol.
Dawson Springs now goes to 1-9 for the season. The Lady Panthers travel to Christian Fellowship Monday.
