Lyon County completed the season sweep of Trigg County Monday in a preview of the girls’ 5th District Tournament that begins in two weeks at Wildcat Gym.
The Lady Lyons led wire-to-wire and took advantage of a cold-shooting Trigg team to grab a 41-30 win.
Both teams struggled to score early, but Lyon began to hit shots while Trigg didn’t The Lady Wildcat press forced 15 first half turnovers, but Trigg missed 18 of its 22 shots in the first half.
Lyon began the second quarter with a 12-2 run that proved to be the difference in the game. The Lady Lyons hit 6 of 14 shots in the frame and converted eight Trigg turnovers into eight Lyon points.
Gracen Wynn hit an uncontested 3-pointer ahead of the halftime horn for a 24-12 Lyon lead the break.
Lyon kept its lead at double digits for most of the third quarter until Kara Hyde hit a 3-pointer late in the quarter to bring Trigg to within 32-24.
Trigg got as close as 37-30 with 3:01 left but missed its final four shots from the field and one free throw attempt to end the game.
The Lady Wildcats could not solve the zone of Lyon County, hitting 10 of 51 shots from the field and 3 of 27 behind the arc. Trigg also missed 13 free throws in what has been a season-long struggle.
Lyon County shot 38-percent from the field and outrebounded Trigg 39-30. They were able to overcome 28 turnovers that Trigg converted into just nine points.
Rose Smith’s double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds paced Lyon County. Calista Collins and Gracen Wyn each scored seven points with Collins added 12 rebounds.
Marleigh Reynolds was the lone Lady Wildcat to reach double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Adri Phillips added eight points and nine rebounds.
Monday’s game had no bearing on seeding for the district tournament that begins March 16 at Trigg County. Lyon and Trigg will meet again in the semifinals.
Trigg County looks to snap a 3-game losing streak Friday when they host Hopkins County Central.
Lyon County’s 13th win is the most of any team in the region. They play at Daviess County Tuesday.
