Trigg County seventh-grader Makenna Hendricks made history Saturday when she won the 126-pound class at the Third Annual Girls’ State Wrestling Tournament.  Hendricks is the first Trigg girls’ wrestler to win a state title and only the second in school history.

Hendricks opened with a 36-second win over Knox Central’s Ivy Partin.  She defeated Calloway County senior Caitlyn Powers in the semifinals via a 7-1 win.

In the championship match, Hendricks defeated Simon Kenton freshman Gabriella Ocasio by an 8-4 decision.

Hendricks, who also competes on the boys’ team at Trigg County, is the school’s first state wrestling champion since her coach Ralph Stevens won the 155-pound class in 1982.

Lily Hull also represented Trigg County at the state tournament and lost her two matches in the 106-pound class.

Hendricks’ state championship accounted for all 24 of Trigg County’s points which were good for 13th place.

Girls’ wrestling is not sanctioned by the KHSAA.  The girls’ state tournament is sponsored by the Kentucky Wrestling Coaches Association who has made overtures to get the KHSAA to sanction the girls’ sport.  Kentucky is one of 24 states that does not sanction girls’ wrestling.
