
Acting like a team that knew what to do in a close game late, Webster County rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit to nab a 65-62 win at Trigg County Saturday. The win snapped a six-game losing streak by the Trojans and extended Trigg’s winless streak to four games.
Trigg County broke a 6-6 first quarter tie with a Tae Thompson 3-pointer and didn’t relinquish the lead until the game’s final minute.
The Wildcats shot 62-percent from the field in the first half, building a lead as large as nine points. De’Von Ladd scored the final nine points of the half for Trigg to help the Wildcats lead 34-29 at halftime.
Webster cut the lead to one point on three different occasions in the third quarter but could never take the lead.
Kendric Adams scored five points to key a 12-1 Trigg run for a 50-39 lead with 1:39 left in the third quarter. But Webster County wouldn’t go away as Aaron Harmon scored five points to get the Trojans to within 52-46 heading into the final quarter.
Things began to snowball against Trigg County in the early stages of the fourth quarter. Ladd, who had scored 15 points through three quarters, fouled out with 5:02 left. Then Trigg was forced to call its final two timeouts within 10 seconds of another with 4:27 left.
Webster chipped away and tied the game at 57 and at 59 on buckets by Harmon, who finished with 16 points.
Jhaden Vaughn gave Trigg a 62-59 lead with 3:23 left. They wouldn’t score again. Ryan Roland got Webster to within 62-61 with 1:43 left. The Trojans took their first lead since the first quarter when Hunter McNaughton scored with 41 seconds left.
Trigg County missed its final six attempts, including 3 three-pointers, and had three turnovers in the final 3:23. Webster County hit 8 of 16 fourth quarter shots and scored seven points off eight Trigg turnovers in outscoring the Wildcats 19-10 in the final frame.
Turnovers were a problem for Trigg County for a second straight game. The Trojans scored 21 points off 21 Trigg turnovers. The Wildcats had 25 turnovers in a Thursday loss at Union County.
Jhaden Vaughn led Trigg County with 16 points and eight rebounds. Tae Thompson scored 12 points, and Khyran Vaughn had 10 points, Kendric Adams had nine points, eight rebounds, and a team-high five assists.
Destin Allen led Webster County with 18 points, two more than Harmon’s 16 points.
The game was the first between the schools in six years, and Webster won for the sixth time in the last seven meetings.
Trigg County will visit Lyon County Monday. Webster County is done until the 6th District Tournament.
