Looking to put the brakes on a two-game losing run at Dawson Springs on Monday night, the Lyon County girls’ basketball team used a 30-point, 19-rebound night from senior Calista Collins to roll over the Lady Panthers 72-35.
Collins’ monster performance leaves her just 13 rebounds short of 1,000 for her career, while she’s also amassed 895 career points.
Dawson Springs led 7-5 after Natalee Oldham knocked down a 3-pointer, and the game was knotted at 9-9 after a Gracie Harper layup. Rose Smith hit a pair of baseline jumpers inside the final :20, and the Lady Lyons led 13-9 after one and never looked back.
Lyon County blew the game open with an 11-0 run to start the second quarter, including 4 points from Collins and a 3-pointer by Gracen Wynn. Collins scored the final 9 points of the half for the Lady Lyons, and they took a commanding 35-19 lead into the break.
Abby Ward and Harper combined for 10 points in the third for the Lady Panthers, but the Lady Lyons started the quarter with a 16-2 spurt to stretch the margin to 30.
Smith’s jumper to start the fourth triggered a running clock, part of a 9-point quarter to give her 20 for the game. Collins added 8 more, including the final bucket of the 37-point victory.
The Lady Lyons improve to 15-7 with a visit from Christian Fellowship coming up on Tuesday. The Lady Panthers slip to 2-12 and will entertain Livingston Central in their next outing.
