Sierra Seiber hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left to lift Logan County to a 35-33 win over Trigg County Monday in Russellville.
Seiber’s game-winner thwarted a fourth quarter comeback by Trigg County. Down 28-19 late in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats scored eight straight points to get to within 28-27 with 7:08 left.
Consecutive buckets by Logan pushed the lead back to 32-27 with 5:00 left.
Trigg County took its first lead of the second half after Marleigh Reynolds tied the game with 2:42 left and hit one of two free throws with 1:03 left to put Trigg up 33-32.
Trigg County had four chances to tie or take the lead in the final half-minute but missed a 3-pointer, had two turnovers, and failed to execute an inbounds play under their own basket.
Trigg has dropped five of six games since missing two weeks due to winter weather and now their offense is struggling with the postseason a week away.
As one of the top defensive girls’ basketball teams in the region, Trigg County has held 13 of its 20 opponents to under 50 points. Trigg was 7-1 in its first eight games but just 1-4 since.
The offensive woes come at a bad time for Trigg County, which has dropped seven of eight games with the district tournament beginning next week.
The Lady Wildcats stayed away from a 3-point attack and shot 39-percent from the field, including 42-percent in the second half as they looked for closer shots. 18 of Trigg’s 33 points came in the paint.
However, Logan County took advantage of Trigg’s miscues in the game, scoring 17 points off 14 Lady Wildcat turnovers.
The Lady Cougars were also unexpectantly accurate from the outside. Logan County came into the game shooting 23-percent from 3-point range but hit 5 of 15, including 3 of 7 second half attempts.
While no Logan player scored in double figures, six players scored at least five points led by Kadyn Costello’s seven points.
Marleigh Reynolds led the Lady Wildcats with 13 points and seven rebounds. Adri Phillips scored 11 points, and Olivia Noffsinger scored seven. The only other player to hit the scoring column was Kara Hyde who scored two points.
Logan County’s win was its fourth in 25 games this year. They finish their regular season Wednesday against Todd County Central.
Trigg County will host Crittenden County Thursday and Dawson Springs Friday to close out their pre-district tournament schedule.
