2nd Region Winner to Get Rare Sweet 16 Matchup With 4th Region

3-10-mad2

For the first time since 1941, the Second Region and Fourth Region champs will meet in the first round of the Boys’ Sweet 16 state basketball tournament.

The draw held Wednesday at the KHSAA offices in Lexington did the region winner no favors.

The top five teams in the Fourth Region according to the KHSAA RPI are Bowling Green (.718); Clinton County (.638); Franklin-Simpson (.606); Barren County (.602); and defending region champion Warren Central (.601).

The top five teams in the Second Region according to the same RPI are Lyon County (.632); Hopkinsville (.598); defending region champion Madisonville (.569); Webster County (.551); and University Heights (.549).

The Second and Fourth regions were supposed to meet in the first round of the Sweet 16 last year. However, the first-round matchup between Madisonville and Warren Central never occurred as the KHSAA postponed and later canceled the Sweet 16 due to COVID-19.

The Second Region winner will have a brutal championship path.  A potential second-round matchup with either Ballard, Trinity, or Male from the Seventh Region or 11th region champ Frederick Douglass or Lexington Catholic awaits.
