Four Mississippi State pitchers combined to no-hit Kent State on Sunday.

But it took a diving catch in left field by a former University Heights Academy standout to give them a chance.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning and State already up 3-0, a 1-0 pitch to Kent State’s Michael Turner was hit into the gap and looked like it might be an extra-base hit.

But Drew McGowan chased down the ball and made a diving catch, then received a standing ovation from the crowd on hand at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville, Miss.

McGowan also had a sacrifice fly in the contest as the Diamond Dawgs defeated the Golden Flash 13-0.

The winning pitcher was former Paducah Tilghman standout Jackson Fristoe, who pitched six perfect innings, striking out eight.

Fristoe was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.

It was the first no-hitter in 22 years for Mississippi State.

On Tuesday, eight Mississippi State hurlers combined on a two-hitter in a 10-0 win over Grambling. The Diamond Dawgs are 9-3.

Mississippi State hosts the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns on Wednesday.
