For the first time since 1980, the Second Region winner will face the Third Region winner in the first round of the Girls’ Sweet 16 Basketball Tournament.
The draw held Wednesday at the KHSAA offices places the Second Region winner in a tough bottom bracket.
The top five teams in the Second Region according to the KHSAA RPI are defending champion Henderson County (.646); Crittenden County (.619); Webster County (.565); Union County (.559); and Lyon County (.548).
The top five teams in the Third Region RPI are Breckinridge County (.653); defending champion Owensboro Catholic (.588); Apollo (.586); Meade County (.585); and McLean County (.553).
A potential second-round matchup would have the winner play either the 9th Region champion, possibly Ryle or Dixie Heights, or the 16th Region champion which could be Boyd County, Russell, or defending champion Ashland Blazer.
The last time Regions Two and Three met in the first round of the Sweet 16 was 1980 when West Hopkins beat Apollo in the first round.
The only other time they met was in 1975 when South Hopkins scored a 43-28 first-round win over Owensboro.
The 2021 Mingua Beef Jerky Girls Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament will be played April 7-10 at Rupp Arena.
