Lady Rebels’ Cold Start Leads to Loss to Logan County

Scoring struggles plagued the Todd County Central girls’ basketball team for the second-straight game on Wednesday, with the Lady Rebels going scoreless in the first quarter on the way to a 41-30 loss to visiting Logan County.

The Lady Rebels drop their fifth-straight, the last two without leading scorer and rebounder Lucy Chester, to end the regular season at 7-12.  The Lady Cougars win their second in a row to move to 5-21 overall.

Logan County’s Abby Hinton had all but one of the total points scored in the first quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to help the Lady Cougars to a 7-0 lead after one.

Hinton opened the second with another 3 to stretch the margin to double digits, before 7th-grader Jamya Kay scored the Lady Rebels’ first points with a 3-pointer.

Down 18-3, Kay scored in the lane and Abby Williams followed with a runner to cut the lead to 11, but Gracie Borders answered with a 3-pointer for the last basket of the half and a 21-7 Lady Cougar advantage.

Hinton drilled back-to-back 3s to build the cushion to 20 and force a Todd Central timeout midway through the quarter.  The Lady Rebels trailed by as many as 22 before Ciara Collins scored on a drive for a 34-14 score going to the fourth.

But Todd Central found the scoring touch in the final frame, posting the first 10 points to cut the lead in half with 3:21 to play.  Williams scored 8 points in the fourth, and her 3-pointer with just under a minute left pulled the Lady Rebels to within 8.

Williams cut the margin to 8 again after two free throws with :26 on the clock, but while the Lady Cougars left the door open by going 5/11 from the free-throw line over the last eight minutes, they did enough to hold on for the win.

Williams was the lone Lady Rebel in double figures with 10, while Hinton scored 20 and Kadyn Costello finished with 11 for Logan County.
