Trigg County will take a six-game losing streak into next week’s Girls’ 5th District Basketball Tournament following a 58-50 loss to Crittenden County Thursday.

The district contest had no bearing on the seeding for next week’s tourney. The Lady Rockets had already locked up the top seed. Trigg will be the No. 3 seed.

Crittenden used a 21-4 third quarter run to erase a seven-point Trigg lead.  The Lady Wildcats cut a 12-point deficit to five in the fourth quarter, but a nearly four-minute scoring drought helped send Trigg to its fourth loss in six district games.

Trigg County had struggled offensively over the past six weeks and hit the 50-point mark Thursday for the first time since Feb. 2.  The Lady Wildcats only attempted eight 3-pointers, hitting three.  Trigg shot 47-percent from the field, its highest since December.

However, two season-long issues resurfaced in the loss.  The Lady Wildcats missed six uncontested layups and hit 5 of 17 free throws.

Conversely, Crittenden County’s Taylor Guess outshot Trigg at the charity stripe by herself.  The Lady Rocket sophomore was 14 of 19 at the line and finished with a game-high 28 points. As a team, Crittenden hit 18 of 27.

The game had seven lead changes in the first half and was tied at 27 at halftime. Trigg scored the first seven points of the second half to claim its biggest lead at 34-27.

Guess and Jaelyn Duncan combined to score 19 of Crittenden’s 21 points during the decisive 21-4 run.  Duncan finished with 16 points for the Lady Rockets, who were playing without its second-leading scorer Nahla Woodward [sick].

Both teams had 16 turnovers, and Crittenden outrebounded Trigg 28-20.

Marleigh Reynolds led Trigg County with 20 points and four rebounds. Adri Phillips and Iyanna Grubbs both scored 10 points with Phillips adding nine rebounds.

Crittenden County improved to 16-4 with its third straight win after losing in the All A Classic state semifinals.

Trigg County falls to 8-13.
