There are a lot of things to do in the Smoky Mountains that probably would not surprise you. However, there’s also a spot here where you can see, touch and feed all the parrots/exotic birds you want. Parrot Mountain and Gardens has hundreds of tropical birds on an immaculate four-acre garden that was as much fun for my 9- and 11-year-old grandchildren as it was for me and their parents. There were infants in strollers and probably other guests who were in their 80’s. It’s that kind of ageless playground.

Isabella and Fletcher Hollingsworth have more than 120 species of birds at the sanctuary based on what one of many staff members told us. The parrot houses were all unique but I loved walking down the paths and seeing so many tropical birds sitting on open perches — and talking to you in their own special way.

My grandson was thrilled when he found the secret garden entrance where several birds are flying freely around you. But it gets even better when you exit into the bird garden.

You can find the parrots and other birds from your hand and most are not bashful about eating. Many will climb right on your arm, shoulder, or even your head — and stay put as you moved around. It’s just not easy to find spots where you can get so close to so many colorful birds.

I think we all liked being able to let the lories consume nectar from a cup in your hand. I think I had six or seven lories perched on my hand in seconds trying to get to the nectar. The birds were in no hurry to leave your arm/hand when the nectar was gone.

The baby bird nursery is the first place I’ve been where you not only could pet baby birds but also purchase one to take home as several people were doing.

Parrot Mountain and Garden is open March 7 through Nov. 30 except for Thanksgiving. Staff members explained the birds are housed inside during the colder months to protect them.

Admission is $21.95 for those 12 years old and up, $9.95 for children 2-11and 18.95 for seniors 65 years old and up.

Parrot Mountain and Gardens is located at 1471 McCarter Hollow Road, Pigeon Forge, TN 37862, just a few miles from Dollywood. For more information call 865-774-1749
