Dane Key says his family -- mother Nicole, father Donte and brother Devon -- is involved in his college decision making
Frederick Douglass junior receiver Dane Key, the state’s top-rated junior, cut his list of college choices to 10 today and Kentucky is on that list. Virginia, Arkansas, Michigan State, Oregon, South Carolina, Purdue, Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, and Mississippi State also made his final list. Other offers he has included Texas and Tennessee while both Notre Dame and Ohio State have shown interest.
Key had 37 catches for 625 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2020 — teammate Dekel Crowdus, a UK signee, had 31 catches for 397 yards and 10 scores. As a sophomore, Key had 33 catches for 545 yards and eight scores.
Key said he’s had a “lot of communication” with new Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen.
“He calls me weekly. He asks me about football and life and even my baseball,” Key, the son of former UK linebacker Donte Key, said. “Coach Coen is really recruiting me hard.”
Key admits he didn’t know much about Coen before he left the Los Angeles Rams to join Mark Stoops’ staff.
“(Kentucky recruiting coordinator) Vince Marrow was just telling me before he (Coen) got here that they were getting a guy who was going to throw the ball,” Key said.
Marrow has stayed busy recruiting Key just like he did Key’s teammates, Jager Burton and Dekel Crowdus, who both signed with the Cats in December.
“I really like coach Vince,” Key said. “Every time he talked to them he was 100 percent honest with them and he has been with me too. He communicates very well with me and my family.”
