The search for a new football coach at Trigg County High School is officially getting underway. Former Trigg County coach Mark Peach notified his team Friday morning that he was stepping down as the school’s head football coach after just one season, and then he was officially introduced Friday afternoon as the new head football coach at Danville High School.
Peach went 3-7 during his one season on the job in Trigg County, losing to Paducah Tilghman in the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
The announcement comes just days after the year anniversary of Peach being introduced as the new Trigg County football coach. Prior to coming to Trigg County, Peach served as head coach at Anderson County for 15 seasons, posting a 114-65 record. His coaching contract was not renewed by the school following a 4-7 season in 2019.
Peach left Anderson County as the school’s all-time winningest coach and won 14 playoff games in his tenure. In addition to two region championships, Anderson County was the state runner-up in 2011.
At the time of his hire, Peach replaced Coby Lewis who stepped down after nine seasons and 45 wins.
Peach will be stepping into a brewing cauldron at Danville. The school earlier this year fired very popular head coach Clay Clevenger. Clevenger was a Danville grad, an all-state lineman who played on state championship teams. He took the Danville job in 2013, with his 2016 team finishing 12-3 and was Class AA state runner-up. His 2017 team went 15-0 and won the state title behind the play of Mr. Football D’Mauriae VanCleave, the first Admiral ever to win that award.
The decision by the administration to fire Clevenger generated a strong reaction from the Danville sports and business community. Administration officials simply stated they were looking for a new direction for the Admiral football program.
Community support for Clevenger was widespread across the region following his dismissal.
