
Trigg County scored seven times in the sixth inning to rally past Madisonville 9-4 and pick up its first win of the 2021 baseball season.
The Wildcats made two early runs stand up for four innings until Madisonville took advantage of some Trigg wildness on the mound to plate four runs in the fifth inning.
With two outs, Hunter Gossett and Ethan Taylor both singled, and Noah Questelle reached on an error to load the bases. Four straight walks plated four runs for the Maroons.
Trigg began its sixth inning rally when Jay Humphries reached on an infield error, and Joe Peca followed with a single. Tyler Ahart had a two-run single to tie the game at 4-4. Trevor Terrell laid down a squeeze bunt to score Ahart for a 5-4 Trigg lead.
After two walks, Andrew Williamson had a two-run single for a 7-4 lead. Two more bases-loaded walks finished the seven-run inning for the Wildcats.
Both teams had six hits in the game. Trigg pitchers issued 10 walks, and Madisonville provided six walks.
Humphries and Joe Peca each had two hits for the Wildcats with Ahart driving in three runs.
Bryce Cunningham started on the mound and left with two outs in the fifth inning. He struck out three and allowed five hits. None of the four runs he allowed were earned.
Isaac Peca got the win in relief with two innings of one-hit baseball.
Parker Mathis and Ethan Taylor each had two hits for Madisonville. Jonathon Cain struck out nine on the mound and allowed six hits. Five of the nine runs he allowed were unearned.
Trigg County [1-2] will enjoy spring break and return to action on April 12 at Kenwood, Tenn.
Madisonville [0-2] will travel to Todd County Central Monday.
