Lyon County rallied from a 7-0 deficit and won in walk-off fashion on Tuesday — defeating Russell County 8-7 in the Mustang Invitational at McCracken County.
Lyon (5-1) saw Russell County (2-1) score seven times in the top of the fifth inning to break up what had been a pitchers’ duel.
The Lakers sent 11 men to the plate in the fifth inning to build a 7-0 lead.
However, Lyon answered almost immediately, putting up a six-spot in the bottom of the fifth to get right back in the game. The Lyons batted around in the frame while getting back to within 7-6.
A two-out RBI single by Brody Williams in the bottom of the sixth allowed Lyon to tie the game at 7-7.
In the bottom of the seventh, Lyon used three straight singles to push across the winning run.
Jackson Shoulders singled to right to start the inning. Aidan Rush then singled on a bunt. Eli Baker followed with a base hit into left field, bringing Shoulders around with the winning run.
Rush finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and a pair of runs batted in. Williams was 2-for-4 and drove in three while Gunnar Bingham was 3-for-4.
Rush picked up the pitching victory for the Lyons in relief of Shoulders, who started on the mound. Rush pitched the final two innings and didn’t allow a hit.
Lyon is scheduled to return to Paducah on Friday to take on Dyer County, Tennessee, in the Mustang Invitational.
