Other than a bit of a bump in the 2nd inning, Saturday was a Walker Ashby kind of day for the Heritage Christian Academy Warriors. Ashby gave the Warriors four big innings on the mound as they routed the Owensboro Knights 14-4 in five innings.
Ashby gave up only one earned run in four innings, striking out eight, while walking five. Ashby’s only trouble spot came in the top of the 2nd inning. Trailing 2-0, Owensboro loaded the bases with no outs on three walks. After a strikeout, the Knights scored one run on a single, but that would be it. The Warriors caught a runner stealing, and then Ashby got a strikeout to close out the threat.
Meanwhile, Ashby’s teammates were cranking out the offense, as the Warriors would score in every inning of the contest. Weston Powell hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
HCA then took advantage of three walks and a hit batter to put six more runs on the board in the bottom of the second to make it 8-0. In the third, Carter Glover drove in a run with a double to left field to make it 9-1.
A couple of walks, a passed ball, and a wild pitch generated two more runs for the Warriors in the fourth to push the lead out to 11-1.
After the Knights scored three runs on Warrior relief pitching in the top of the fifth, Heritage Christian closed the game out with three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. The big hits in the inning were a Carter Glover triple and a double off the bat of Weston Powell.
Weston Powell finished the day 2-3 with a home run, a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Glover ended up 3-4 with a triple, a double, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Trenton Hayes went 2-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Jackson Thompson was 2-3, with two triples and three runs scored.
