A late comeback bid fell just short as Caldwell County dropped an 11-10 decision in baseball action at Union County on Friday.

The Tigers (3-5) got off to a great start with four runs in the top of the first inning.

However, Union (4-8) countered with a five-run second inning and went on to build an 11-7 lead through six innings.

Caldwell loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with no outs to get the potential tying run to the plate.

Logan Smiley and Tate VanHooser drove in runs with singles to make it 11-9, then an error on a ground ball by Deontaye Walls allowed another run to come in and make it a one-run ballgame.

Caldwell still had the bases loaded with two outs, but a strikeout ended the contest.

The Tigers outhit the Braves 13-12.

VanHooser was 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three runs batted in. Smiley finished 3-for-5 with an RBI. Brady Holeman was 2-for-5.

Landon Jones was 3-for-3 with a double and drove in three to lead Union.

Cannon Sheffer was the winning pitcher for Union in relief. He allowed two earned runs on one base hit.

Holeman, the third Caldwell pitcher, suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed two unearned runs on two hits in 1.2 innings of work.

The Tigers will next visit Dawson Springs on Tuesday.
