
The Fort Campbell Falcons were ‘oh so close to the first win of the season Saturday. The Falcons dropped a doubleheader at home to Ballard Memorial Saturday, losing the first game in extra innings, then falling in a mercy-rule game in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Bombers used a hit batter and three singles to score two runs in the top of the eighth inning to pick up a 9-7 win over the Falcons.
Ballard Memorial had jumped out to a 5-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second and one more in the top of the 4th.
The Falcons got going in the bottom of the fourth, scoring four runs to cut the lead to 5-4. The big hit in the inning was an RBI single from Ethan Egner.
Fort Campbell then appeared to have things going its way as the Falcons took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the 5th. The Falcons got another RBI single from Egner, as well as RBI singles from Andrew Haughenberry and Travis Doyle.
Ballard Memorial was able to scratch out a couple of runs in the top of the 6th to then tie the game at 7-7.
Haughenberry, Egner, and Doyle all had two hits in the game to lead the Falcons. Egner added two RBIs.
In the second game of the day, the Bombers hit the Falcons with three runs in the top of the first and never looked back on their way to a 15-2 five-inning win.
The Bombers put up three in the first and four in the second to take a 7-1 lead. The Bombers would add another run in the top of the 4th to make it 8-1.
The Falcons used a sacrifice grounder to get a run in the bottom of the inning.
Ballard then put the game away with a seven-run 5th inning. The Bombers connected for eight hits in the inning, two of them for extra bases.
Greysen Meyer had two hits in the game for the Falcons to lead the offensive effort.
The losses drop the Falcons to 0-7 on the year. They return to action Monday against Trigg County.
