
One big inning was enough for the Caldwell County baseball team to pick up a win on Friday.
The Tigers broke up a pitchers’ duel with five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held off Trigg 5-2 at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.
Deontaye Walls limited the visiting Wildcats to just four base hits in the contest while surrendering only two unearned runs in the top of the sixth inning. Walls fanned three and walked just one.
Andrew Williamson matched zeroes with Walls for the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth.
Caldwell loaded the bases with no outs in the decisive inning on consecutive singles by Matthew Blackburn, Gabe Dyer and Jamus Carneyhan.
Collin Whittington followed with a double near the line in left field to drive in the first two runs of the game.
Carter Whittington followed with a double to left to plate two more runs and make it a 4-0 game.
After a Logan Smiley infield single put runners on the corners, a squeeze bunt by Hunter Newsom brought in Carter Whittington to make it 5-0.
Trigg (5-6) took advantage of a pair of Caldwell errors to score twice in the top of the sixth inning as the Wildcats tried to battle back in it.
Joe Peca doubled home a run with two out while Isaac Pecca singled in another to make it a 5-2 game.
Bryce Cunningham walked to lead off the seventh for Trigg.
However, Walls got a strikeout and two ground balls to end the contest.
Carter Whittington was the only player in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs batted in for the Tigers.
Caldwell has won its last six matchups against its former district rival. The Tigers hold a 60-22-1 advantage in the all-time series with Trigg.
Caldwell (5-6) has just two games on the schedule next week. The Tigers host 7th District foe Madisonville-North Hopkins on Tuesday. Caldwell then plays the Maroons in Madisonville on Thursday.
Trigg has a 5th District home date against Lyon County on Monday. The Wildcats are scheduled to play at home again on Tuesday against 1st Region program Calloway County.
