One player in the 2022 recruiting class who Kentucky continues to be in a strong position with is Shaedon Sharpe, a 6-4 guard for Dream City Christian (Glendale, Ariz.). He’s one of the more athletic players in his recruiting class and had an impressive weekend at an AAU event in Indianapolis
His AAU head coach, Dwayne Washington of UPlay, likes to see Sharpe challenged. That’s one reason he’s such a fan of the Grind Session, the circuit Dream City Christian plays on during the regular season.
“The competition there helps a great deal. You cannot have a letdown playing against a very high level of competition every game,” Washington said. “Playing in the Grind Session teaches him not to take games off. It makes him stay aggressive. If not, he gets exposed.
“Every team he plays against has excellent players. It’s a very high level of play. I love the Grind Session. I think Dan Hudson does an excellent job getting the right teams with big upsides and star power. That circuit tells you who you are because all kids on these teams were once the best players on their teams,
“I like how teams come from different states. It makes for great competition. It’s tough and physical play and a good matchup of styles. I also really like it because everyone plays so hard all the time.”
Washington said there was never any consideration to having Sharpe, the No. 2 rated player in Canada, change schools for his senior season.
“He has to bring it every game. He has high-level abilities and the only thing that can hurt him is taking plays off or taking something for granted,” Washington said. “In the Grind Session, he can’t do that.
“He has athleticism, shooting. He’s unselfish and has a very high IQ,” Washington said. “Our goal is to have him ready when he steps on a college campus to be ready to separate himself from others with his understanding of the game.”
