Mary Browder Howell has conquered every challenge she has been faced with in life. The next challenge for the Murray High senior will be college golf after signing to play Tuesday at Sewanee The University of the South in Tennessee.
During her senior season, she tied for sixth place at the region tournament and tied for 32nd at the state tournament. She also finished second at the Murray Invitational and had fourth-place finishes at the All A Classic State Tournament and the Hopkinsville Invitational.
She was named Second Team All-State by the Kentucky Golf Coaches Association and Golf House Kentucky. Howell was also named to the All-Region Golf Team and was named a Bluegrass Tour All-Star.
Howell was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 as a ten-year-old. A trip to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis followed as did six rounds of experimental chemotherapy that limited the normal side effects.
Not long after leaving St. Jude, Mary took up the game of golf. She joined the Murray High golf team as a middle schooler which preceded a successful high school career.
With those challenges behind her, Howell is ready to conquer her next challenge – playing golf at an NCAA Division III school.
