Madisonville-North Hopkins came up with an unearned run in the top of the ninth inning to edge the Caldwell County Tigers 5-4 Tuesday at the VFW Ballpark in Princeton.
The game was tied 4-4 through four innings, then neither side scored again until the Maroons broke through in the second extra inning.
The go-ahead run got on base when Ethan Taylor reached on an error with one out. With two outs, pinch runner Tomas Olivera came in to score when Noah Questelle singled into right-center to give the Maroons a 5-4 advantage.
Questelle finished 2-for-4 for Madisonville.
Caldwell got its leadoff man on base in the bottom of the ninth, but he was thrown out stealing. A strikeout and a pop-up ended the game.
Jonathon Caine was the winning pitcher for the Maroons in relief of Landon Cline. Cline went the first three innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits while strike out five. Caine gave up just one unearned run on two base hits while fanning 14 and walking two in six innings of work.
For Caldwell, Tate VanHooser was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI while Logan Smiley and Jamus Carneyhan each went 2-for-4 for the Tigers. Smiley also had a double and drove in a run.
Caldwell got strong relief work from Deontaye Walls, who allowed just an unearned run on five hits in five innings. He struck out three and walked three.
Ben Goodaker started for the Tigers, giving up two earned runs on two hits while striking out four and walking five.
The Tigers are 5-7 overall and 2-2 in the district while the Maroons are 8-4 and 3-0.
The teams are scheduled to play again on Thursday, this time in Madisonville.
