Sheri Hancock has been wanting to see her team finish a game strong once they get out to a big lead. The Christian County softball coach got her wish Friday as the Lady Colonels claimed a 12-2 win over Caldwell County.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Princeton but was moved to Christian County due to wet field conditions.

The Lady Colonels broke open the game with a nine-run second inning. But Hancock was more pleased with the three runs added over the next two innings that ended the game in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Christian County began the second inning with six singles and two walks. Up 6-0, Reni Shemwell blasted a three-run homer to center.  Her sixth round-tripper put Caldwell ahead 9-0.

Caldwell struck back in the third inning when Allie Felker doubled ahead of Shelby Lane’s first home run of the season.

The Lady Colonels got the two runs back in the home half on RBI singles by Pickle Winkler and Riley Hancock that all came after two outs.

Caldwell County advanced runners to second and third with two outs in both the third and fourth innings but couldn’t push across a run.

Aalaisha McGregor put the Lady Colonels up 12-2 with a solo home run to left field in the fourth. The sophomore catcher was one of three Lady Colonels with two hits in the game. Shemwell and Riley Hancock both had two hits and three RBIs, and Winker also drove in a pair.

Allie Felker had three hits for Caldwell County to raise her season batting average to .560.  Alicia Stanley chipped in with two hits. The Lady Colonels outhit Caldwell 12-10.

Gracie Harned didn’t allow an earned run in three innings in the circle for the Lady Colonels.  She struck out two in getting the win.

Christian County improved to 11-3 and will host a pair of state-ranked teams Saturday – Daviess County at 11 and Male at 3.

Caldwell dropped to 6-8 and will travel to Graves County Monday.
