After being shut out for the first time this season in their opening game of the day, the Christian County Lady Colonels got off to a much quicker start in their second game Saturday afternoon. Christian County jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and then held off Louisville Male for a 6-4 win.
The Lady Colonels broke the ice in the bottom of the first inning. After a walk to Pickle Winker to lead off the inning, Aalaisha McGregor connected on an RBI single with two outs. Tenley Gilbert followed that up with a two-run blast to put Christian County up 3-0.
The Lady Colonels then extended their lead in the top of the third inning. Riley Hancock led off the inning with a single. Reni Shemwell followed that up with a massive blast to center field to push the lead out to 5-0.
However, the #12 Lady Bulldogs would not go away quite that easy. Male loaded the bases with no outs on two walks and a single to lead off the top of the fourth. Christian County appeared to have dodged the trouble after a home to first double play, but Male came up with a two-out single to score a pair of runs to cut the lead to 5-2.
The rally for Male continued in the top of the 6th inning. After a one-out single and hit batter, Isabelle Wright doubled to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Lady Colonels were able to take advantage of a Male error in the bottom of the inning to add an all-important insurance run and push the lead out to 6-3.
Riley Hancock set down the first two batters in the top of the 7th, but Male had one last charge to make. Lauren Pelton tripled to centerfield and then Makenna Page doubled to cut the lead to 6-4 and bring the tying run to the plate.
But, Riley Hancock was able to induce Elizabeth Lampe into a popup to end the game.
A big game for Reni Shemwell, who went 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored. Tenley Gilbert finished 1-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
Gracie Harned started the game and picked up the win for Christian County, giving up one earned run on two hits, while walking four.
