Gunnar Bingham’s three-run homer capped off a big 5th inning rally to propel the Lyon County Lyons past Caldwell County Friday evening at Lee S. Jones Park. Bingham’s blast scored the last three of five runs in the inning as the Lyons came from 3-0 down to take the 5-3 win over the Tigers.
The Lyons overcame a sluggish night at the plate that saw them held to just three hits in the game by Caldwell County pitcher Deontaye Walls. The Lyons also had their struggles in the field, committing three errors in the contest.
The game was a scoreless battle until Caldwell County broke the ice in the top of the fourth. Two errors and two singles to open the inning moved Caldwell County out to a 2-0 lead. The Tigers would add another run on a two-out single to lead 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.
The Lyon rally in the bottom of the 5th got underway with walks to Jackson Shoulders and Aidan Rush. After a fielder’s choice, Eli Baker came up with an RBI single to cut the lead to 3-1. A Caldwell error made it 3-2, setting up Bingham’s heroics to give the Lyons the lead.
Caldwell County would get runners on base in both the top of the 6th and the top of the 7th, but could not convert those baserunners into runs.
Deontaye Walls led the Tiger offense, going 2-4 in the game. Four other Tigers had one hit each, as Caldwell finished the game scoring their three runs on a total of six hits.
Walls went all six innings on the mound, giving up five runs, only one of them earned, on just three base hits, while walking four.
The Lyons were led by Gunnar Bingham, who went 1-2 with a home run, three RBIs, and a run scored. Travis Yancy and Eli Baker had the only other hits for Lyon County.
Brady Darnall got the start on the mound for the Lyons, going four innings, giving up three runs, none of them earned, on three hits, and striking out three.
The win, which was Lyon County’s 8th straight, moves the Lyons to 13-3 on the year.
Caldwell County falls to 6-8.
