There are heartbreaking ways to lose, and then there are “heartbreaking” ways to lose. The Christian County Lady Colonels experienced the latter Monday evening.
Christian County entered the bottom of the 7th on the road in Bowling Green leading Greenwood 3-0. The Lady Colonels had limited the Lady Gators to four hits and appeared to have things rolling in their direction towards a fourth straight win.
However, the Greenwood got back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. After a strikeout, the Lady Gators’ Kaitlyn Oliver was hit by a pitch to load the bases, bringing junior Josi Morrison to the plate. Morrison entered the game far and away Greenwood’s biggest threat at the plate. She had hit five of the Lady Gators seven home runs and was the only Lady Gator in double figures in RBIs with 26.
The bad news for Christian County was that Morrison increased both of those numbers in the bottom of the seventh inning. Morrison cranked a walk-off grand slam to snatch a victory from the Lady Colonels and give it to the Lady Gators in stunning fashion with a 4-3 win.
The game was a scoreless battle until the top of the 4th inning when Gracie Harned singled to drive in Tenley Gilbert and put Christian County up 1-0.
Nothing changed in the game until the top of the seventh when Pickle Winkler left the yard, scoring Gracie Harned in the process, giving the Lady Colonels the 3-0 lead, setting up Morrison’s heroics.
Harned had a solid game for Christian County, going 3-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Tenley Gilbert was 2-3 with a run scored. Pickle Winkler finished 1-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a run scored.
Riley Hancock went the distance for the Lady Colonels, giving up four earned runs, on five hits, striking out six, while walking five.
The loss drops Christian County to 15-5. They return home Tuesday to take on University Heights in an 8th District matchup.
